You have heard about the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula), and maybe even attended a presentation about this invasive insect pest. But have you experienced it? Have you seen the insect in the field?

Spotted Lanternfly has not been in the news lately. But that does not mean you can’t go look for them! At this time of year Spotted Lanternfly in Ohio is only present as an egg mass. But training your eye to see egg masses is key.

Like many other states in the Midwest, Ohio is preparing for imminent infestations of Spotted Lanternfly (SLF). This invasive planthopper, first detected in Pennsylvania in 2014, poses a threat to the fruit production and plant growth of valuable specialty crops, most notably grapevines. Though infestations have already been confirmed in several counties throughout Ohio, history tells us that additional infestations will continue to appear and grow. Emerald Ash Borer University (EABU) is a collaboration among Michigan State University, Purdue University and Ohio State University, with support from the United States Department of Agiculture's Forest Service (USDA FS). Penn State University Extension will be offering a free webinar on November 16, 2022 at 10:00 am titled Spotted Lanternfly and the Potential Impacts on the Maple Syrup Industry.

We are hearing some mixed messages when it comes to the Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), and want to provide some clarification from the Ohio perspective.  The SLF has been in the news, and definitely making its presence known on social media including Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. One thing we are seeing more and more is the message of squishing, squashing, stomping, and smashing this invasive insect.

Ohio Department of Agriculture sprayed an infestation of Spotted Lanternfly on the West Side of Cleveland at Mohican Park.

Cleveland Urban Forestry, Cleveland Division of Park Maintenance, Cleveland Metroparks, and The Ohio State University Extension Team Up to Teach employees to ‘SPOT’ Spotted Lanternfly.

Tree of Heaven has produced its seed pods. Now is a great time to scout and identify its location. And remember, Tree of Heaven is a preferred host of Spotted Lanternfly.
