This week's Turfgrass Team Times (TTT) includes timely updates from Dr. Ed Nangle, Dr. David Gardner, Dr. Tyler Carr, and Dr. Shaohui Wu. 

 

Highlights include: preemergent and post emergent weed management; spring seeding; winter annual purple deadnettle; cool season grasses; annual bluegrass weevil; and warm season grass still dormant.

Sneaky Winter Annuals

Henbit
The annual deep purple bloom of Purple Deadnettle and Henbit in Ohio farm fields and a purple haze rising over lawns may conjure a nostalgic pop culture smash-up. These non-native showy weeds belong to the mint family, Lamiaceae, as evidenced by their square stems which is a family trait.

If you've traveled Ohio's southern interstates lately, particularly on I-71 between Columbus and Cincinnati, you may have hummed a Hendrix tune or felt like riders of the purple sage as you drove past farm fields bathed in a deep purple hue.
