The late-season blooms of goldenrod attract a plethora of pollinators including flies. The convergence of pollinators also attracts a range of predators that make a living on these beneficial insects. Nature doesn’t play favorites.

Remember the Forgotten During Pollinator Week: June 17 – 24, 2024

This is “National Pollinator Week” (June 17 – 24). The non-profit “Pollinator Partnership” conceived the idea in 2007 to encourage groups and communities to hold celebrations and awareness campaigns highlighting the importance of pollinators. That same year, the U.S. Senate designated the third week of June to be the official celebratory week for the recognition of pollinators.

Skunk cabbage (a.k.a. swamp cabbage, clumpfoot cabbage, meadow cabbage or polecat weed) (Symplocarpus foetidus) may be one of the earliest blooming spring flowers in Ohio. Its flowers could be easily overlooked by the causal observer.

Soil Mining Bees on the Wing

Dalton Westerbeck with Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum e-mailed me Wednesday to report that soil "mining bees" are waking from their winter naps. Dalton is an ISA Certified Arborist and an Ohio State Beekeepers Association, Master Beekeeper. He is locating and marking all of the mining bee "colonies" in the Grove so he can document their population densities and seasonal development.

National Pollinator Week Begins Today

The Pollinator Partnership is proud to announce that June 18-24, 2018 has been designated National Pollinator Week. This week long observation is a time to celebrate pollinators and spread the word about what can be done to protect them.

 

Eleven years ago the U.S. Senate’s unanimous approval and designation of a week in June as “National Pollinator Week” marked a necessary step toward addressing the urgent issue of declining pollinator populations. The starting point for yesterday's Southwest Ohio BYGLive! Diagnostic Walk-About held at Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum was inadvertently located in the middle of a very busy ground-nesting bee bailiwick. This sparked an impromptu discussion on the behavior and importance of these native pollinators.
