What’s Going on with Yellow Poplars?

Yellow poplars are failing to leaf out fully in eastern Ohio. The affected trees are located where Ohio experienced a record-breaking drought last season. The trees are also being affected by the yellow poplar weevil and the tuliptree scale.

Be Alert for Magnolia Scale AND its Predators

Magnolia scale (Neolecanium cornuparvum) is a type of "soft scale" so named because the females are hidden beneath a helmet-like soft leathery covering that provides limited protection. Soft scales can be squashed!

Signate Lady Beetle larvae totally decimated a magnolia scale infestation a small saucer magnolia. The larvae have distinctly segmented bodies cloaked in cottony white wax making them look like mealybugs which they will also eat. The adults are very small measuring around 1/8” long.
