Guignardia Leaf Blotch of Aesculus is a fungal disease that is commonly observed on buckeyes and horsechestnuts in Ohio at this time of the year. However, don’t leap to the conclusion that all leaf blotches are symptomatic of this disease.

White, rounded, woolly-looking galls are appearing on oaks throughout Ohio. They are the Wool Sower Gall and are produced under the direction of the gall wasp, Callirhytis seminator (family Cynipidae).

USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) released a Federal Order yesterday providing new information on the expansion of quarantines for the Box Tree Moth (BTM) (Cydalima perspectalis, family Crambidae). The Order also noted that conditions for interstate movement of regulated articles have been established.

Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum) and Wild Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) have reached developmental stages that place these weeds outside of effective management options in southwest Ohio. Wild parsnip is producing seeds while poison hemlock is in full bloom meaning seeds can still develop on plants that are cut or sprayed with an herbicide.
