Growing Degree Day (GDD) Summary, May 2023

Here is your Growing Degree Day (GDD) summary ending May 31, 2023. This summary is a year-to-date summary and includes the months of January, February, March, April and May. I was not able to post a year-to-date summary last month, so you will see that I have included two numbers in the table below. The first number is the GDD year-to-date through the month of April and the second number is the GDD year-to-date through the month of May.

Knowing the GDD is good, but knowing where that number falls within the sequence of plants blooming and insect activity is even better. This is a great tool to use and become more familiar with as we experience the uniqueness of each season.

Stay tuned for these year-to-date summaries each month in 2023.

Now that you have seen the summary, what is your GDD? Check out this link https://weather.cfaes.osu.edu/gdd/, type in your Ohio zip code, and see where your location is at in this biological calendar of both plants (first and full bloom) and pests. Note that the pests are typically highlighted in the table to more easily distinguish it from the plants.

It is important to note that you can also hit the summary tab within the site and it will list the GDD accumilations for that zip code for previous years as well - it is nice to see the history, and the average of those years. For example, today in Toledo (43516) we are at 728 GDD accumilations. But this is this year, but how does that compare to year's gone by? How about a 20 year average? Take a peak at the numbers below that includes the year and the GDD for this date (06/10):
