The Ohio State Fair runs July 27th to August 7, 2022. Prior to the commencement of the fair, The Ohio Christmas Tree Association hosted their annual Christmas Tree Judging contest.
Winners will be on display at the fair.
Based on the US Standards for grades of Christmas Trees, the contest is based on various categories. Entries included White Pine, Canaan Fir, White Spruce, and Blue Spruce.
Each Genus is judged on the following criteria: Foliage, Handle (base), Taper, Leader (top of the tree), and Marketability. Trees are judged and scores are totaled. From these scores, a Grand Champion and Reserve Champion are selected.
Judges look for absence if insect and diseases,
Density,
Overall uniformity of the tree and Taper (which is height to width ratio).
Judges included Ohio State University Educators Tom deHaas Carrie Jagger, Ashley Kulhanek, Kathy Smith, and Amy Stone.
Tree farms submitting entries included Greig’s Christmas Tree Farm, Koch Christmas Trees, Galehouse Christmas Trees.
The winners include:
Grand Champion – Greig’s Christmas Tree Farm – Jeff and Doug Greig - Canaan Fir – Ashtabula County
Reserve Champion – Koch Tree Farm – Roger Koch – White Spruce – Butler County
Second place Fir – Galehouse Christmas Trees – Amy Galehouse – Canaan Fir – Wayne County
