You may have heard of Spotted Lanternfly. You may have visited a state like Pennsylvania and seen it. You may have read that Spotted Lanternfly (aka SLF) has been found it parts of Ohio. But sad to say, “Spotted Lanternfly has been discovered in Erie County!”.

The Ohio State University Educators held a training for community members and industry professional. The most commonly asked question was “Do They Bite?” The answer is “NO!”

This afternoon's BYGL Alert on the Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) is a media release that was distributed by the Ohio Department of Agriculture on Friday, August 4 and is the source the information below. 

Last week, Jonathon Shields with the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) reporting seeing the first spotted lanternfly adult in Ohio this year. The observation was made in Cincinnati, Ohio in an already identified infestation in southwest Ohio.

Some Spotted Lanternfly Nymphs have progressed to the 4th instar stage. This is the stage where the nymphs are red with white and black spots. It won’t be long until adults are present.

On Thursday, May 4, 2023, Jonathon Shields, Agriculture Inspection Manager with the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), confirmed hatch of spotted lanternfly (SLF) within the Cincinnati infestation. ODA captured 8 SLF nymphs on Thursday afternoon in the known infested area.

Spring brings much anticipation. Warmer temperatures bring a show of spring wildflowers, blooms of spring flowering trees and shrubs, and insects activity- including the hatch of spotted lanternfly (SLF) nymphs where overwintering egg masses where present.
