Are you a woodland owner who would like to produce an annual income from their property? It can be difficult to achieve an annual income but maple production may be the answer.

Concerned Ohioans are reporting their maples have stunted leaves or no leaves at all; particularly towards the top of the tree. However, it’s unlikely a tree-killing issue is responsible for a general widespread maple malaise throughout Ohio.

Tree benefits in terms of the economic benefits of the environmental services trees provide are many, from storm water remediation to energy savings. The i-Tree models help estimate these benefits and are presented here for a large maple in northeast Ohio.

On June 18 I sent a byglalert about maple anthracnose diagnosed earlier this spring. The plant disease symptoms (see below) for that byglalert item included discolored blotches on the foliage which coalesced along leaf veins. The sample above for this alert today, sent from OSU Extension in Morrow County, show symptoms of leaf discoloration between the veins. This is the classic difference between physiological leaf scorch (this case) and anthracnose fungal disease (the previous case). The difference is all in the details.
