Major Miner Bees

I recently came across one of the largest colonies of soil mining bees I’ve ever seen in Ohio. The image below shows the extent of the collection of these important plant pollinators found in Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum (SGCA).

Gnarly Oak Galls on Pin Oaks

Gnarly-looking leaf galls are appearing on pin oaks in southwest Ohio. The unsightly, lumpy growths are produced by a gnat-like gall-midge, so I’ve commonly called the plant growths Gnarled Oak Leaf Midge Galls. Not very creative, but descriptive.
