The handiwork of Pit-Trapping Antlions is becoming obvious in dry soil in Ohio. The antlions excavate a funnel-shaped pit, measuring around 3/4 - 2" wide and 1/2" deep, with the antlion buried at the bottom.

Beech Blight Aphids have a horrible-sounding common name; however, they cause little to no damage to the overall health of infested American beech trees, which is their primary host. On the other hand, don't put your hand in a colony because they will attack and stab you!

Curtis Young (OSU Extension, Van Wert County) showed participants in this week’s BYGL Zoom Inservice pictures of the parasitoid wasp Itoplectis conquisitor (family Ichneumonidae). The wasps were all males, and they were milling around on this season’s bagworms (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis, family Psychidae) in northwest Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) has reported the presence of Box Tree Moths (BTM) (Cydalima perspectalis (family Crambidae) in Ashtabula, Clark, Cuyahoga, and Preble counties based on catching adult male moths in pheromone-baited monitoring traps. First detected in Ohio in June 2023, BTM has now been found in 11 counties across the state: Ashtabula, Butler, Clark, Clermont, Cuyahoga, Hamilton, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Warren.

Every year I have grown hanging baskets of traditional impatient on my hanging planter hooks. This year was a pleasant surprise. Impatiens galore growing in the soil below the hanging baskets that were all volunteers. But why?
