Members of the Ohio State University Extension Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team (BEHT) placed pheromone traps across twenty one Ohio counties this past May to monitor for the invasive box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis). Counties participating in the trapping are located both within (Butler, Clark, Clermont, Greene, Lake, Montgomery) and outside (Adams, Auglaize, Brown, Delaware, Erie, Knox, Madison, Medina, Monroe, Ottawa, Preble, Putnam, Ross, Van Wert, Wayne) the current BTM quarantine area in Ohio (see below).
BEHT members use the same trapping protocol as green industry nurseries participating in the BTM compliance agreement outlined by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. One or more bucket traps containing a pheremone lure were placed within each participating county. Traps are checked weekly and moth counts reported. Adult BTM have only been intermittently found in traps located in Greene and Montgomery counties.
For the week of July 13, only one adult moth was trapped within Greene County.
BEHT BTM trap updates will continue through this fall. If you suspect a BTM infestation, report your findings to ODA by taking a photo and uploading it to the Ohio Plant Pest Reporter tool.
