It’s not to early to think Christmas. Ohio Christmas Tree Association under the leadership of Valerie Graham, Executive Director of OCTA hosted a judging contest for members at The Ohio State Fair.
The competition was held on July 24th, 2023.
Categories included Spruce, Pines, and Fir.
Trees submitted in the spruce category included Serbian Spruce,
Blue Spruce,
White Spruce and Norway Spruce.
Pine species included White Pine,
And Scot’s Pine (Also known as Scotch Pine).
Fir species included Canaan Fir,
White (Concolor) Fir,
and Balsam Fir.
Trees were judged on a variety of categories including taper, handle, shape, density, top, and market.
The Grand Champion was a Canaan Fir submitted by Jeff and Doug Greig from Greig’s Christmas Tree Farm located in Willoughby and Ashtabula Ohio.
The Reserve Champion was submitted by Alan Binger from Hidden Pines Christmas Tree Farm in Clyde, Ohio.
Judges included Educators from The Ohio State University including Amy Stone, Thomas deHaas, Carrie Jagger, and Mike Hogan. The group was facilitated by Kathy Smith.
The Ohio State Fair runs July 26th through August 6th, 2023 with the trees on display in the Natural Resource Area.
The Ohio Christmas Tree Association also sponsors an event titles “Operation Evergreen” where trees that are donated by Ohio growers are sent to military personnel deployed oversees.
Soldiers respond how appreciative they are to receive the evergreens!
