A Wheel (Bug) of Misfortune is Afoot

Wheel Bug
Adult Wheel Bug (Arilus cristatus, family Reduviidae) are now roaming landscapes and forests in southwest Ohio. The immatures (= nymphs) have been with us for some time lurking among the leaves of trees and shrubs on the hunt for soft-bodied insects.

Ironweed part 2: An Ironweed Specialist Bee

Melissodes, as a genus, are generally are fall fliers.  Melissodes denticulatus here flies July through early September, in synchrony with the ironweed bloom and collects all that fantastic white pollen for her larva. Fall in love with this ironweed specialist bee.

You can never have too much IRONWEED! Part 1.

These beautiful, tall, vibrant purple native flowers are a welcome sign of late summer and a BOON to many insects. They are a valuable late season nectar source for many insects and butterflies, and their pollen is a required resource for specialist long-horned bees.

Squash Vine Borer
Squash Vine Borers (SVB) (Melittia cucurbitae) are highly effective in squelching squash providing another form of relief from excessive Cucurbita. The stem-boring caterpillars cause plants to turn yellow, wilt, and die. Symptoms produced by the caterpillars are becoming apparent in Ohio.

The Tiger Bee Fly: A Carpenter Bee Nemesis

Tiger Bee Fly
The Tiger Bee Fly (Xenox tigrinus (previously Anthrax tigrinus)) belongs to the family, Bombyliidae, with members commonly called “bee flies” because they bear a striking resemblance to bees. That explains the “bee” in the tiger bee fly common name. The “tiger” comes from the intricate black markings on the fly’s wings.
