According to the Annotated List of Ohio Spiders published by the Ohio Biological Survey in 2021, our state is home to 682 species of spiders (order Araneae). Many reach maturity in late summer to early fall which is why they are so common at this time of the year.

Emerald Ash Borer University (EABU) is kicking of the fall semester. The first free and virtual session will be held on Thursday, October 10th, 2024, at 10:00 am.

Africanized honey bees have been misunderstood and mischaracterized. While they do exhibit unique traits, their management is entirely possible with the right knowledge and skills. It’s essential to separate fact from fiction to foster a better understanding of these bees and methods for distinguishing them from European honey bees.

The late-season blooms of goldenrod attract a plethora of pollinators including flies. The convergence of pollinators also attracts a range of predators that make a living on these beneficial insects. Nature doesn’t play favorites.

I received several complaints this past week from homeowners and professionals about large numbers of stinging insects buzzing oaks in Ohio landscapes. The most recent involved an oak next to a Columbus playground.

Current weather conditions are dictating what should be done, or not done, in the turfgrass.

The terms “leaffolder,” “leafroller,” and “leaftier” refer to the leaf structures produced by certain moth caterpillars. Leaffolders fold leaves, leafrollers roll leaves, and leaftiers tie leaves together. The descriptive terms have no relationship to moth taxonomy. They are intended to aid in identification by portraying the caterpillar’s creative use of silk to fashion a home.
