There is a new Ohio State University Extension FactSheet that you must check out.  The FactSheet covers the Viburnum Leaf Beetle, an invasive species from Europe and Asia.  Curtis Young, Extension Educator in VanWert County, authored this FactSheet that can be found online at http://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/anr-39

The FactSheet includes information on:  Host Plants; VLB Identification; VLB Life Cycle and Plant Injury; Management Strategies; and VLB Spread.

While this insect was first discovered in Ohio in 2002 in Ashtabula County, and is established in numerous northeast Ohio counties, it has been moving westward and was recently detected in Lucas County this summer.  Both the larvae and adult beetles feed on viburnum leaves and can cause death to shrubs both in natural areas and landscapes when populations levels are high enough.

Cornell University has a great website with excellent photos and videos and should be included in your favorites.  The website can be found at http://www.hort.cornell.edu/vlb/

Infestations can be reported using the Great Lake Early Detection Network (GLEDN) App. More information about this tool can be found at http://www.gledn.org/
