The Byrd Polar Research Center (BPRC) at The Ohio State University is recognized internationally as a leader in polar and alpine research. Our research programs are conducted throughout the world. The Center is named in honor of Admiral Richard E. Byrd, America's most famous polar explorer. There are eight research groups at BPRC, along with a Library, Archival Program, and the US Polar Rock Repository. Research at the Center focuses on the role of cold regions in the Earth's overall climate system, and encompasses geological sciences, geochemistry, glaciology, paleoclimatology, meteorology, remote sensing, ocean dynamics, and the history of polar exploration.

Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears

Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears is a free online magazine for teachers of grades K-5 that integrates science content with teaching literacy skills. It provides good background information for both teachers and students in the higher grades, as well.
The latest issue, Earth's Changing Surface (Issue 9, December 2008), highlights lessons in which students model the forces that shape and change Earth. Our Feature Story, "The Heart of Erebus," teaches students about Antarctica's active volcano while the associated templates provide support as they identify facts, ask questions, and make connections with nonfiction text.

SWOT (Surface Water Ocean Topography) Mission
